Submovement overlap as a measure of movement smoothness

چکیده

Many measures have been employed to quantify an aspect of healthy, skilled movement, which has been termed “movement smoothness” of which jerk is the most common. We propose a new, biologicallymotivated quantification of “movement smoothness”: submovement overlap. In previous work, changes in submovements have been linked to changes in movement smoothness. Further investigation revealed that in stroke patients, submovements consistently tend to grow closer over the course of recovery. While jerk analysis showed some patients’ movements growing significantly less smooth, submovement blending provided a remarkably consistent metric of recovery, despite wide variations in subject age, lesion territory, and stroke severity. In stroke patients, it is not average jerk but submovement blending that meaningfully quantifies the movement smoothing that accompanies recovery. The strength and consistency with which it quantified patients’ recovery indicates that analysis of submovement overlap may be a useful tool for measuring learning or other changes in motor behavior in future human movement studies.

Movement smoothness changes during stroke recovery.

Smoothness is characteristic of coordinated human movements, and stroke patients' movements seem to grow more smooth with recovery. We used a robotic therapy device to analyze five different measures of movement smoothness in the hemiparetic arm of 31 patients recovering from stroke. Four of the five metrics showed general increases in smoothness for the entire patient population. However, acco...

Persistence in visual feedback control by the elderly 1

1Some of this data have been presented in abstract form at the 1995 Society for Neuroscience conference, San Diego, and the 1996 Biomechanics and Neural Control of Movement conference, Ohio. Abstract Young and elderly subjects performed aiming movements to a visual target with a manipulandum to determine whether the elderly reduce their reliance on visual feedback after extended practice. Relia...

Submovement Composition of Head Movement

Limb movement is smooth and corrections of movement trajectory and amplitude are barely noticeable midflight. This suggests that skeletomuscular motor commands are smooth in transition, such that the rate of change of acceleration (or jerk) is minimized. Here we applied the methodology of minimum-jerk submovement decomposition to a member of the skeletomuscular family, the head movement. We exa...

Optimality in human motor performance: ideal control of rapid aimed movements.

A stochastic optimized-submovement model is proposed for Pitts' law, the classic logarithmic tradeoff between the duration and spatial precision of rapid aimed movements. According to the model, an aimed movement toward a specified target region involves a primary submovement and an optional secondary corrective submovement. The submovements are assumed to be programmed such that they minimize ...

Submovement control processes in discrete aiming as a function of space-time constraints

There is preliminary evidence that there are several types of submovements in movement aiming that reflect different processes of control and can result from particular task constraints. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of movement space and time task criteria on the prevalence of different submovement control characteristics in discrete aiming. Twelve participants complet...
